Service Description

This course is a new 2 day introduction to some basic enamelling techniques plus some jewellery making skills. Aimed at beginners and over the course of 2 days, we will cover some basic skills with metal such as adding some texture, saw piecing, filing and basic forming. We will practice some enamelling on copper to begin with, testing out some colour combinations. You can make some finished items on jewellery in copper and then we will move on to silver on day 2. We will use 2 different methods of firing the enamel including using a kiln to fire the copper and then a torch to fire the silver which is great for those of you that don't have a kiln. - Course Breakdown - Day 1 - In the morning we will start with practicing some texturing techniques on sheet metal such as hammers to texture, punches to add a design or the rolling mill to emboss a texture. This will be followed by some saw piecing practice, cutting some shapes in copper using a jewellers saw. In the afternoon we will start using some enamels on small sheets of copper to create some test samples of colour and these will be fired in the kiln. Time permitting you can enamel some of your copper shapes from the morning. Day 2 - We will utilise all the skills covered on day 1 to create some copper and silver jewellery. The number of copper items made is pretty much unlimited (except for time) and you will be given a small sheet of silver to create either a pendant or pair of earrings or possibly both. The amount of pieces you create in silver is dependant on the design and size you choose. Skills covered during the 2 day course will be - texturing metal, saw piercing (cutting using a jewellery saw), filing and sanding plus using enamels, applying to metal using a dry sifting technique. Kiln firing and torch firing enamel. We will use opaque enamel on copper and transparent enamel on silver. Please note soldering is not part of this course. All jewellery made must have a hole for attaching jump rings or earring wires and a few findings will be supplied (students area responsible for supplying their own chains). We will also discuss some additional information such as hallmarking requirements if you wish to make jewellery to sell. I can also provide a suppliers list for materials and tools etc.
