Service Description

During this fantastic and ever popular 2 day course, you will get to make your own fused glass cabochons and then set one into a bezel setting that is made from scratch to make a beautiful ring or pendant resulting in a piece of jewellery that is completely hand crafted by you! This course is suitable for beginners but it is a bit more challenging than a basic started/taster workshop. Day 1 - Will we make some basic fused glass cabochons using a variety of dichroic glass and other coloured glass before firing in a microwave kiln. You will get the chance to make several glass cabochons so you can choose your favourite for day 2. Then for the last couple of hours of the day while the glass is cooling, we will start working with silver. You can choose to make a ring or halo pendant and we will make the silver ring or circle to incorporate into your design ready for day 2. So for example, if you want to make a ring from your chosen glass cabochon you will make the band or if you want to incorporate your cabochon into a halo necklace you will make the silver circle part. Day 2 - The second day will be spent completing your design using your chosen glass cabochon made on day 1. You will create the bezel from scratch to fit your chosen dichroic glass cabochon. Materials included are - A selection of dichroic glass, coloured and clear glass and frit etc for creating fused glass cabochons. All silver needed to create a sterling silver ring or pendant. (a basic fine trace chain is included for this however chain length is a standard 16 or 18 ") Please note - this course is not designed to give you an in-depth knowledge of glass fusing. We will cover the basics to get you started fusing small amounts of glass in a microwave kiln. The learning outcome for the session is to create a glass cabochon and set it into a hand made bezel with the result being an entirely hand made item of jewellery. Please also note, there will be size limitations when it comes to the glass cabs. You will not be able to make anything too large. 2 cm x 2 cm is a rough guide as a maximum to ensure all students present can get 1 cab in the kiln per firing. We usually manage around 7 or 8 kiln loads by the end of day 1 so students usually make a minimum of 7 cabs. These size limitations are also in place to ensure your resulting cabs are suitable for bezel setting.
